Today's new voices shaping tomorrow's musicals.

As our organization celebrates 25 years of creating and developing new work by emerging artists, we’re changing our name! Prospect Musicals now centers our artistic identity as one of NYC’s foremost producers of new musical theater.

Prospect received renewed support from the NEA to continue our development of this new jazz musical. Help us raise our matching funds for the grant.
From silent pictures to the talkies, groundbreaking cinematic pioneer Oscar Micheaux battles the racism of Hollywood to bring Black stories to the silver screen... facing down censorship boards, financial ruin, and family betrayal. Micheaux's legacy as America's first major Black filmmaker comes to syncopated and soulful life in this new jazz musical.
Through a composer commissioning grant from the New York State Council on the Arts and a grant from the NEA, Prospect has commissioned the Brooklyn based indie-folk-pop-americana group Bandits on the Run to write a new musical inspired by Alaska's Klondike Gold Rush.

In the twilight of the British Empire, an aspiring poet named Maya Mehta sets out to make her mark on the world. When Mahatma Gandhi’s famous Salt March passes through her hometown, Maya is torn between duty to her family and the passionate ideals of her freedom-fighting friends in the Indian Independence Movement. Ultimately, through the power of words and actions, she defies the Empire and joins the legacy of India’s quest for sovereignty.

Prospect Musicals seeks applicants to participate in the 18th installment of its annual musical theater laboratory program.
Submissions will be due by Monday, November 18th.
Each year, Prospect's lab brings together writing teams to create short musicals in response to a curated assignment. The 6-week program culminates in a public presentation of the new works generated through the lab process. The 2025 lab features in-person writer meetings, rehearsals, and final concert performance on February 20th.
As Prospect is in the midst of celebrating the company’s 25th year of producing new work, this year's lab – titled JUMP CUT – will have a central theme of time, and how change occurs over time. Each writing team will be randomly assigned a length of time (spanning from seconds to a millenia) and asked to create a short piece which jumps through time to create narrative arc, character growth, and discovery. We look forward to exploring all facets of this theme in our curatorial process with the selected writing teams.
Each lab writing team will create a short (8-10 minute) musical inspired by the writing prompt, to be performed by a cast of 2-4 performers.
Works generated in the lab will be presented in a one-night-only, concert-style public performance on
