PORTRAITS
Musical Theatre Lab

February 22-March 1, 2013

West End Theatre

From a crisp black and white to a sepia daguerreotype to the rich shades of a classic canvas, every portrait tells a story. Prospect presented PORTRAITS: an evening of eight short original musicals inspired by incredible images and created by the eighteen writers in 2013’s musical theater lab. The eight participating writing teams were selected through a competitive open application process, assigned a portrait, and wrote, workshopped, and presented a brief musical.

Death for Five Voices

March 6-17, 2013

West End Theatre

Inspired by true events in the life of the brilliant and infamous Renaissance composer and murderer Carlo Gesualdo, this workshop staging of Death For Five Voices is a compelling and psychologically complex world premiere work with a score that explores the darker realms of desire and inspiration.

Set amid the political intrigue, religious conflict and artistic vibrancy of the late Renaissance, Death for Five Voices investigates the dark harmonies of Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa - who is remembered for his unusually complex sacred music and for the extravagantly vicious double murder of his wife and her lover.

“Magnetically complex… Daring in ambition, exciting in execution, Death For Five Voices deserves far more exposure than its current limited run.” - Broadway World

“Magnificent, sweeping, and lush... a majestic and breathtaking journey into the past... The entire superlative cast could not have been more pitch-perfect from start to finish.” - Act Three

Tamar of the River

September 21-October 20, 2013

Baruch Performing Arts Center, Nagelburg Theatre

Tamar of the River is a compelling and innovative music theater world premiere inspired by the Biblical story of Tamar and Judah. In a war-torn world, where East and West are divided by a River red with blood, one young woman is called to raise her voice. As Tamar sets out single-mindedly in pursuit of peace, she journeys to a foreign land, finding a new family and unexpected love. Each decision that brings her closer to her goal also becomes a choice she struggles to accept.

"Alluring and lyrical." - The New York Times

"It's hard to imagine a more ambitious piece of musical drama coming out of indie theatre than Prospect Theater Company's production of Tamar of the River... The narrative takes on immense power through Michelson’s rich and distinctive score." - NY Theater Now
